Governments face challenges in the Great

Permanent Committee on Food Security of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), assesses the government is serious and great attention about food security in the midst of a challenging world situation.

But some of them about the problems such a large area, high prices, the ability and purchasing power, technology, research and development to decentralization, pose a challenge for the government.

It was made chairman of the Standing Committee of Food Security Kadin, Franciscus Welirang, when asked by Reuters at his office in Wisma Indocemen Building, Jakarta, Thursday (12/01/2011) this.

"Indonesia, addressing food security very seriously. However, there are a number of problems that become challenges in food security policy now," said Welirang.

According to him, Indonesia is not the continent, but a maritime nation. "Therefore, how the relationship between the regions. This is what makes the problem of food security is a connectivity problem. How transport can be run to connect between the regions, if there is no connectivity," said Welirang who is also Director of PT Indofood.

Franciscus Welirang said, the food security, self-sufficiency sense right now is if it does not import rice in massive quantities. "If the production of 36 million tons per year, whether imports from 1.5 to 1.7 million tons of it can be accepted or not? If you then import into a big, might have happened. However, the question whether it is effective," he said again.

"With a production area of 12 million a year, is still effective results? This is our challenge in food security, especially in terms of land and infrastructure," he added.

Not to mention about the culture of farmers in planting, in which farmers have the right to choose seeds that are planted, cropping patterns, and patterns of fertilizer.

"Also about the financing and the budget that determines the increase of national food security. The financing bank for the agricultural sector is largely determined by the seasons, so different from the implementation of the banking industry in the production berorintasi. Therefore, no proper financial support from banks," said Franciscus again .

Another challenge of food security, namely the matter of regional autonomy in more than 500 districts / cities. "Success or failure depend on the implementation of food security in the region. If the area is not true, our food security is also broken," said Francis.
